    The Armando Diaz Italian light cruiser

The Armando Diaz was an Italian light cruiser of the Condottieri class, Cadorna type. 
The main artillery included eight 152mm guns.
In this class, the power of the engines was extraordinary (95000hp), but the thickness of the armour and the underwater protection have been sacrified to the high speed (37kn): all the cruisers of this class have been sunk by torpedoes.

L' Armando Diaz era un incrociatore leggero Italiano della Classe Condottieri, tipo Cadorna. 
L' artiglieria principale comprendeva otto cannoni da 152mm.
In questa Classe, la potenza delle macchine era straordinaria (95000hp), ma lo spessore della corazza e la protezione subacquea furono sacrificate all' elevata velocità (37 nodi): tutti gli incrociatori di questa Classe furono affondati da siluri.

On February 25, 1941, together with the sistership Giovanni delle Bande Nere and the destroyers Ascari and Corazziere, the Armando Diaz was escorting four merchants in a convoy heading to Tripoli (Lybia).
When she was off Kerkenna Islands, the Italian cruiser was spotted and torpedoed by the British submarine HMS Upight.

Il 25 Febbraio 1941, insieme al gemello Giovanni delle Bande Nere ed ai cacciatorpediniere Ascari e Corazziere, l' Armando Diaz stava scortando quatro mercantili in un convoglio diterro a Tripoli (Libia).
Mentre era al largo delle Isole Kerkenna, fu avvistato e silurato dal smmergibile Britannico HMS Upright.

The Armando Diaz was hit by a single torpedo, but the hull was devastated by the explosion, and the cruiser sank in few minutes South-East of Kerkenna Islands. 
The destroyer Ascari could rescue as many as 147 survivors, but 464 men of the crew died or were missing.

L' Armando Diaz fu colpito da un solo siluro, ma lo scafo fu devastato dall'esplosione, e l' incrociatore affondò in pchi minuti a Sud-Est delle Isole Kerkenna.
Il cacciatorpediniere Ascari riuscì a soccorrere 147 sopravvissuti, ma 464 uomini dell' equipaggio morirono o furono dati per dispersi.

The wreck of the Armando Diaz lies on a sandy bottom, at a depth of less than -50m. The hull is tilted to port, the bow destroyed by the explosion. 
The armoured towers one and two, with their 152mm guns, lie on the sand, 400m far from the hull.

Il relitto dell' Armando Diaz giace su un fondo sabbioso, ad una profondità di meno di -50m. Lo scafo giace sul fianco sinistro, la prua distrutta dall' esplosione.
Le torri corazzate uno e due, con i loro cannoni da 152mm, giacciono sulla sabbia a 400m dallo scafo.
