    The Smeraldo 600-class Italian submarine

The Smeraldo was an Italian submarine of the 600 class, "Sirena" series: she was built in Taranto by Cantieri Tosi during 1931 and launched during 1933.

Lo Smeraldo era un sommergibile Italiano della Classe 600, serie "Sirena": fu costruito a Taranto nei Cantieri Tosi nel corso del 1931, e varato nel 1933.

During 1937, the Smeraldo took part in the Spanish Civil War. 
On June 11, 1940 (the second day of the Second World War, for Italy) she was the first Italian submarine to attack an enemy ship off Alexandria (Egypt). 
During the II WW, the Smeraldo operated 15 missions.

Nel 1937, lo Smeraldo prese parte alla Guerra Civile Spagnola.
L' 11 Giugno 1940 (il secondo giorno della Seconda Guerra Mondiale, per l' Italia), fu il primo sommergibile Italiano ad attaccare una nave nemica al largo di Alessandria.
Nel corso della Seconda Guerra Mondiale, lo Smeraldo svolse 15 missioni.

On September 15, 1941, the Smeraldo left the base of Augusta (Sicily) heading South to intercept an Allied convoy along the minefields off the coasts of Tunisia. 
But a few days later (the exact date is unknown, probably between September 16 and 26) she collided with a floating mine, and sank with all hands off Bizerta.

Il 15 Settembre 1941, lo Smeraldo salpò dalla base di Augusta (Sicilia) diretto a Sud per intercettare un convoglio Alleato lungo i campi di mine al largo della costa Tunsina.
Ma alcuni giorni dopo (la data esatta è sconosciuta, probabilmente tra il 16 ed il 26 Settembre) il sommergibile urtò una mina galleggiante, ed affondò con tutto l'equipaggio al largo di Biserta.
