    The Alberigo da Barbiano Italian light cruiser

The Alberigo da Barbiano was an Italian light cruiser of the Condottieri class, di Giussano type. 
The main artillery included eight 152mm guns.
In this class, the power of the engines was extraordinary (95000hp), but the thickness of the armour and the underwater protection have been sacrified to the high speed (37kn): all the cruisers of this class have been sunk by torpedoes.

L' artiglieria principale comprendeva otto cannoni da 152mm.

In 1941, the situation of the Italian Forces in Northern Africa was very bad. 
During December it became dramatic, and the Italian Navy was forced to use warships to carry stategic matrials, supplies and ammonitions from Italy to Libya.

Nel 1941, la situazione delle Forze Italiane in Africa Settentrionale era molto difficile. 
Nel Dicembre divenne drammatica, e la Regia Marina fu costretta ad usare navi da guerra per trasportare materiali strategici, provviste e munizioni dall' Italia alla Libia.

On December 7, the Italian cruiser Cadorna delivered a cargo of gasoline to Bengazi (Libya). 
On December 12, the Alberigo da Barbiano and her sistership Alberto di Giussano sailed from Palermo heading to Tripoli (Libya), carrying more than 1000tons of gasoline. 
But the British Intelligence decoded the Italian messages, and the the Allied destroyers HMS Sikh, HMS Legion, HMS Maori and HNMS Isaac Sweers were sent to intercept the Italian cruisers: following the instructions of the Intelligence, during the night of December 14, the destroyers spotted and torpedoed the Italian cruisers, off the coast East of Kelibia (Tunisia): a terrible fire devastated the Alberigo da Barbiano and the Alberto di Giussano, and both cruisers sank in a few minutes.

Il 7 Dicembre, l' incrociatore Italiano Cadorna consegnò un carico di benzina a Bengasi (Libia).
Il 12 Dicembre, l' Alberigo da Barbiano ed il gemello Alberto di Giussano salparono da Palermo diretti a Tripoli (Libia) con un carico di più di 1000 tonnellate di carburante. 
Ma i Servizi Segreti Britannici decrittarono i messaggi Italiani, e i cacciatorpediniere Alleati HMS Sikh, HMS Legion, HMS Maori e HNMS Isaac Sweers furono mandati ad intercettare gli incrociatori Italiani: seguendo le indicazioni dei Servizi Segreti, nella notte del 14 Dicembre i cacciatorpediniere localizzarono e silurarono gli Incrociatori, al largo della costa ad Est di Kelibia (Tunisia): un terribile incendio devastò l' Alberigo da Barbiano e l' Alberto di Giussano, ed entrambi affondarono in pochi minuti.

The Italian torpedoboat Cigno, together with some motorboats, rescued more than 500 sailors, some others reached the coast by themselves, but the Italians suffered more than 900 casualties, including Admiral Toscano, the Italian Commander.

La torpediniera Italiana Cigno, insieme ad alcune motosiluranti, salvò più di 500 marinai, alcuni altri riuscirono a raggingere la costa a nuoto, ma più di 900 Italiani morirono, ed insieme a loro il Comandante della formazione, Ammiraglio Toscano.
