    The U-616 German VII-C class submarine
    East of Cartagena 1944

The U-616 was one of the successiful VII-C class German submarines: she was built in Hamburg by Blohm und Voss during 1941, and launched  during 1942.

The submarines of the VII-C class were 67.10m long; displacement 769 tons (surfaced) 871 tons (submerged); max speed 17.7kn (surfaced) 7.5kn (submerged); five 533mm torpedo launchers; one 88mm gun, plus one or two 20mm or one 37mm machine gun. They were designed to dive down to -220m.

The U-616 sank two enemy ships in nine missions.
On May 13, 1943, she was depth charged and damaged by Allied destroyers when she was attacking a convoy.
On October 9, 1943, the U-616 torpedoed and sank the American destroyer USS Buck off Salerno (Italy).

L' U-616 affondò due navi nemiche in nove missioni.
Il 13 Maggio 1943, fu danneggiato con bombe di profondità da cacciatorpediniere Alleati mentre stava attaccando un convoglio.
Il 9 Ottobre 1943, l' U-616 silurò ed affondò il cacciatorpediniere Statunitense USS Buck al largo di Salerno.

On May 14, 1944, the U-616 attacked an Allied convoy East of Cartagena, damaging two cargo-ships. 
Seven American destroyers and a British Vickers Wellington bomber counterattacked. The USS Nields, USS Macomb, USS Hambleton, USS Gleaves, USS Ellyson, USS Rodman and USS Emmons, chased the German submarine for three days: at the end, the resistance hull of the U-616 was severely damaged by depth charges, and the crew was forced to surface and abandon the boat.

Sette cacciatorpediniere Statunitensi ed un bombardiere Britannico Vickers Wellington contrattaccarono: USS Nields, USS Macomb, USS Hambleton, USS Gleaves, USS Ellyson, USS Rodman ed USS Emmons diedero la caccia al sommergibile Tedesco per tre giorni: alla fine, lo scafo di resistenza dell' U-616 fu danneggiato dalle bombe di profondità, e l'equipaggio fu costretto ad emergere e ad abbandonare il sommergibile.

The U-616 was scuttled East of Cartagena at 36°46'N, 0°52'E.

The crew of the German submarine was rescued by the USS Ellyson that rapidly headed to African coasts: when she was off Oran, just a few hours after the sinking of the U-616, the USS Ellyson was torpedoed by another German submarine, the U-960. 
The attack of the U-960 failed, but in turn she was sunk by Allied destroyers.

L' equipaggio del sommergibile Tedesco fu raccolto dall' USS Ellyson che rapidamente si diresse verso le coste Africane: quando giunse al largo di Orano, poche ore dopo l'affondamento dell' U-616, l' USS Ellyson fu silurato da un altro sommergibile Tedesco, l' U-960.
Ma l' U-960 fallì il suo attacco, e fu a sua volta affondato dai cacciatorpediniere Alleati.
