    The U-374 German VII-C class submarine
    East of Capo Spartivento 1942

The U-374 was one of the successiful VII-C class German submarines: she was built in Kiel by Howaldtswerke during 1939-40 and launched during 1941.

The submarines of the VII-C class were 67.10m long; displacement 769 tons (surfaced) 871 tons (submerged); max speed 17.7kn (surfaced) 7.5kn (submerged); five 533mm torpedo launchers; one 88mm gun, plus one or two 20mm or one 37mm machine gun. They were designed to dive down to -220m.

The U-374 sank three enemy ships in three missions.

On January 12, 1942, the U-374 was patrolling the Ionian Sea East of Capo Spartivento: she was spotted and torpedoed by the British submarine HMS Unbeaten. 
Just one man of the 43-crew survived.
