The USS Buck was a Sims-class American destroyer, built in Philadelphia (Pennsylvania) by the Navy Yard during 1938, and launched during 1939.

On October 9, 1943, the USS Buck was patrolling the Southern Tyrrhenian Sea, when she was spotted and attacked by the German submarine U-616.
The American destroyer was hit by a sound-guided torpedo (Gnat) in the bow powder magazine: the bow was devastated by the explosion, and the USS Buck sank in a few minutes off Salerno.

The survivors were rescued by the British Landing Craft LCT-170 and by the American destroyer USS Gleaves, that in turn sank the U-616 a few months later off Cartagena (Spain, May 14, 1944).
