    The HMS Oswald O-class British submarine 
    S-E to Capo Spartivento 1940

The HMS Oswald was an O-class British submarine: she was bulit in Barrow-in-Furness by Vickers Armstrong during 1927 and launched during 1928. 

L' HMS Oswald era un vecchio sommergibile Britannico della Classe O: fu costruito a Barrow-in-Furness nei cantieri Vickers Armstrong nel corso del 1927, e varato nel 1928.

At the beginning of the II World War the HMS Oswald was based in Alexandria (Egypt).

All'inizio della II Guerra Mondiale, l' HMS Oswald operava dalla base di Alessandria d'Egitto.

During June, 1940 she left Alexandria, heading to the eastern coasts of Sicily: on July 30 she intercepted an Italian convoy in the Straits of Messina. The HMS Oswald fired some torpedoes that failed their targets: the Italian destroyers counterattacked.
On August 1, the Italian destroyer Ugolino Vivaldi spotted the submarine. 
The British Commander had just the time to order abandon ship: the Vivaldi rammed the submarine, that was scuttled 10 miles South-East of Capo Spartivento (Ionian Sea).

Nel Giugno 1940, il sommergibile salpò da Alessandria, facendo rotta verso le coste orientali della Sicilia: il 30 Luglio intercettò un convoglio Italiano nello Stretto di Messina. L' HMS Oswald lanciò alcuni siluri che fallirono il bersaglio: i cacciatorpediniere Italiani di scorta contrattaccarono.
Il 1 Agosto, il cacciatorpediniere Italiano Ugolini Vivaldi localizzò il sommergibile.
Il Comandante Britannico ebbe solo il tempo di ordinare all'equipaggio di abbandonare il sommergibile: il Vivaldi speronò l' HMS Oswald, che affondò 10 miglia a Sud-Est di Capo Spartivento.

52 men of the crew could be rescued, while 3 were missing.
