    The HMS Triad T-class British submarine
    off Capo Colonna 1940

The HMS Triad was a British submarine of the T-class, built in Barrow-in-Furness by Vickers Armstrong during 1938, and launched in 1939. 

L' HMS Triad era un sommergibile Britannico della Classe T, costruito a Barrow-in-Furness nei cantieri Vickers Armstrong nel corso del 1938, e varato nel 1939.

During October 15, 1940, the HMS Triad was spotted by the Italian submarine Enrico Toti when she was cruising off Capo Colonna. Both submarines failed the first torpedo attack, then got so close one to the other that the crews began a fight using the machine guns: the 120mm italian gun was out of order, and an italian sailor threw a shoe against the enemy submarine! 

Il 15 Ottobre 1940, l' HMS Tethis fu intercettato dal sommergibile Italiano Enrico Toti mentre stava incrociando al largo di Capo Colonna. Entrambi i sommergibili fallirono il primo lancio di siluri, quindi serrarono le distanze a tal punto  che gli equipaggi cominciarono combattere con le mitragiatrici: il cannone da 120mm del Toti si rifiutava di sparare, e nella foga della battaglia un marinaio Italiano si tolse una scarpa e la gettò contro il sommergibile nemico!

Suddenly, the Italian gun fired: just a few moments later, a couple of torpedoes hit the HMS Triad, that rapidly sank. No man of the British crew could be rescued.

Ma all' improvviso, il cannone Italiano fece fuoco, e pochi momenti dopo due siluri colpirono l' HMS Triad, che affondò rapidamente. Nessun uomo dell'equipaggio Britannico potè essere salvato.

The British submarine was erroneously identified as the HMS Rainbow: but the latter was probably rammed and sunk by the Italian cargo Antonietta Costa in the Ionian Sea on October 4, 1940. Just during 1988 the British Authorities identified the HMS Triad as the adversary of the Enrico Toti.
The HMS Triad was the only Allied submarine sunk by an Italian submarine during the II World War.

Il sommergibile Britannico fu dapprincipio identificato come l' HMS Rainbow, ma quest' ultimo probabilmente affondò speronato dal trasporto Italiano Antonietta Costa nel Mare Ionio, il 4 Ottobre 1940. Solo nel 1988 le Autorità Britanniche identificarono l' avversario dell' Enrico Toti nell' HMS Triad.
L' HMS Triad fu l'unico sommergibile Alleato affondato da un sommergibile Italiano nel corso della II Guerra Mondiale.
