    The Roman nympheus of Baia

Baia was the most important thermal center of the Roman world. The name comes from Baios, an Ulysses fellow-soldier died and buried on this coasts. The Roman high-society made it a luxury meeting-place since the first Century B.C. building here rich and beautiful villae. A great number of sculptures and buildings have been discovered on the sea bottom facing the town.

Baia fu la più importante stazione termale del mondo Romano: il suo nome deriva da Baio, un compagno di Ulisse che secondo la tradizione morì e fu sepolto su queste coste. L'alta società Romana ne fece un ritrovo di lusso a partire dal Primo Secolo A.C, costruendo qui numerose ricche e splendide ville. Moltissime sculture ed edifici furono scoperti sul fondo marino su cui si affaccia la città.
