    The Ascianghi Italian submarine

The Adua was an Italian submarine of the 600 class, "Adua" or  "Africana" series: she was built and launched in Muggiano (La Spezia) by OTO during 1937.

L' Adua era un sommergibile Italiano della Classe 600, serie "Adua" detta anche "serie Africana": fu costruito e varato a Muggiano (La Spezia) nei cantieri OTO nel corso del 1937.

During the II WW, the Ascianghi operated 23 missions.
Since 1938, she was based in Leros Island (Dodecanese, Greece)

Nel corso della Seconda Guerra Mondiale, l' Ascianghi operò 23 missioni. Dal 1938 era basato sull'Isola di Lero (Dodecaneso, Gercia)

On September 21, 1941, off the coast of Beirouth (Lebanon) the Ascianghi stopped and (after the crew abandoned ship) torpedoed the the Polish tanker Murfete.

Il 21 Settembre 1941, durante un pattugliamento al largo della costa di Beirut, l' Ascianghi fermò e (dopo che l'equipaggio era stato evacuato) silurò la petroliera Polacca Antar. 

On November 15, 1942, the Ascianghi was cruising off the Algerine coasts, when she spotted a British cruiser an two escort ships leaving the harbour of Bougie. The Italian submarine launched a couple of torpedoes, and hit the British fast minesweeper HMS Algerine, that rapidly sank.

Il 15 Novembre 1942, l' Ascianghi era in agguato lungo le coste Algerine, quando sorprese un incrociaore Britannico che, con due navi di scorta, stava uscendo dal porto di Bougie. Il sommergibile Italiano lanciò una coppia di siluri, e colpì il dragamine veloce Britannico HMS Algerine, che affondò rapidamente.

On July 23, 1943, when she was cruising about 10 miles off the Italian base of Augusta (Sicily), the Ascianghi intercepted some British warships, and bravely torpedoed one of the largest, the cruiser HMS Newfoundland, that was severely damaged. In turn, the British escort began a heavy depth bombing. 
The Ascianghi was badly damaged, and forced to surface: here she was hit by the gunfire of the British destroyers HMS Laforey and HMS Eclipse, and rapidly sank. 
23 men of the Italian crew died or were missing, while 27 survivors could be saved by the British sailors.

Il 23 Luglio 1943, mentre stava incrociando circa 10 miglia al largo della base Italiana di Augusta (Sicilia), l' Ascianghi intercettò alcune navi da guerra Britanniche, e coraggiosamente silurò una delle maggiori, l'incrociatore HMS Newfoundland, che fu severamente danneggiato. A loro volta, le unità di scorta cominciarono un pesante bombardamento con cariche di profondità.
L' Ascianghi fu gravemente danneggiato, e fu obbligato a salire in superficie: qui fu colpito dal fuoco delle artiglierie dei cacciatorpediniere Britannici HMS Laforey e HMS Eclipse, ed affondò rapidamente.
23 uomini dell'equipaggio Italiano morirono o furono dati per dispersi, mentre 27 sopravvissuti furono salvati dai marinai Inglesi.
