    The USS Maddox American Bristol-class destroyer
    off Gela 1943

The USS Maddox was a Bristol-class American destroyer, built and launched in Kearny (New York) by Federal Shipbuilding & Drydock Co. during 1942.

During the Allied invasion of Sicily, on July 10, 1943, the USS Maddox was attacked by a German Junkers Ju 88 bomber.
The American destroyer was hit by two bombs that caused the explosion of the stern powder magazine: the entire stern was devastated.

The USS Maddox capsized and sank South of Gela in less then two minutes. 
Just 74 men of the crew survived, while 210 died or were missing.
