    The U-223 German VII-C class submarine 
    North of Palermo 1944

The U-223 was one of the successiful VII-C class German submarines: she was built in Kiel by Krupp Germaniawerft during 1941 and launched during 1942.

The submarines of the VII-C class were 67.10m long; displacement 769 tons (surfaced) 871 tons (submerged); max speed 17.7kn (surfaced) 7.5kn (submerged); five 533mm torpedo launchers; one 88mm gun, plus one or two 20mm or one 37mm machine gun. They were designed to dive down to -220m.

The U-223 operated six missions, sinking five enemy ships. 
On May 14, 1943, she was violently rammed by the British destroyer HMS Hesperus in the North Sea. The U-233 could no longer dive, and two sister ships, the U-337 and the U-359, escorted her to the base.

On March 30, 1944, she was sunk North of Palermo by depth charges from the British destroyers HMS Laforey, HMS Tumult, HMS Hambledon and HMS Blencathra.
27 men of the crew could be rescued, while 23 died or were missing.
