    The HMS Phoenix P-class British submarine
    off Augusta 1940

The HMS Phoenix was an old P-class British submarine, built in Birkenhead by Cammell Laird Shipyard during 1928, and launched during 1929.

The HMS Phoenix operated in Mediterranean from the base of Malta since the beginning of the II World War.

On July 16, 1940, the HMS Phoenix was patrolling the Western Ionian Sea, when she spotted and torpedoed the Italian tanker Dora off the Italian base of Augusta (Eastern Sicily). 
The British submarine was counterattacked by the Italian topedo boat Albatros, whose depth charges sank the HMS Phoenix.
