    The HMS Thunderbolt (former HMS Tethis) T-class 
    British submarine off San Vito lo Capo 1942

The first name of this T-class British submarine was HMS Tethis: she was built in Birkenhead by Cammell Laird during 1936-37, and launched during 1938. 
But, on June 2, 1939, the HMS Tethis sank in Liverpool bay. The submarine was recovered and the name changed in HMS Thunderbolt.

Il primo nome di questo sommergibile Britannico della classe T fu HMS Tethis: fu costruito a Birkenhead dai cantieri Cammell Laird nel corso del 1936-37, e varato nel 1938.
Ma il 2 giugno 1939, l' HMS Tethis affondò nella baia di Liverpool.
Il sommergibile fu recuperato e ribattezzato HMS Thunderbolt.

On December 15, 1940, the HMS Thunderbolt sank the Italian submarine Capitano Tarantini in the Bay of Biscay). 
Then, she moved in Mediterranean. 

Il 15 Dicembre 1940, l' HMS Thunderbolt affondò il sommergibile Italiano Capitano tarantini nel Golfo di Biscaglia. 
Quindi fu trasferito in Mediterraneo.

On March 12, 1942, the HMS Thunderbolt torpedoed the Italian cargo Esterel two miles off San Vito lo Capo. 
The Italian torpedo-boat Libra spotted the British submarine and attacked launching some depth charges. The HMS Thunderbolt was spotted again two days later by the Italian corvette Cicogna, that in turn launched her depth charges: the submarine was thrown out of the water by the explosions. Then, the HMS Thunderbolt sank through a discharge of smoke and oil. 
No man of the crew could be rescued.

Il 12 Marzo 1942, l' HMS Thunderbolt silurò la nave da carico Esterel due miglia al largo di San Vito lo Capo. 
La torpediniera Italiana Libra localizzò il sommergibile Britannico e lo attaccò senza successo con bombe di profondità. L' HMS Thunderbolt fu localizzato nuovamente dalla corvetta Italiana Cicogna, che a sua volta lanciò alcune bombe di profondità: il sommergibile fu scagliato fuori dall'acqua dalle esplosioni. 
Quindi, l' HMS Thunderbolt affondò in mezzo ad una drammatica eruzione di fumo ed olio combustibile. 
Nessun uomo dell'equipaggio potè essere salvato.

The wreck now lies on a sandy bottom at a depth of -60m off S.Vito lo Capo. The hull shows the dramatic effects of the explosion.

Il relitto giace su un fondo sabbioso ad una profondità di -60m al largo di San Vito lo Capo. Lo scafo mostra ancora i terribili effetti dell'esplosione.
