    The "relitto delle monete"  Roman vessel 
    at Camarina  275 A.D.

The ancient ship known as the "relitto delle monete" was a Roman trade vessel sunk near the southern extremity of Camarina bay during 275 A.D. 
About 1000 coins have been recovered from the sandy bottom, together with the remains of a casket: a true sea treasure!

L' antica nave nota come il "relitto delle monete" era una nave commerciale Romana, affondata all'estremità meridionale della baia di Camarina nel 275 A.C.
Circa 1000 monete furono recuperate dallo scafo, insieme ai resti di uno scrigno: un vero tesoro del Mare!

The coins were known as antoniani (right), made in a poor bronze league, and were issued during the reigns of six Emperors, from 253 to 273 A.D. 

Le monete erano degli antoniani (a destra) fuse in una lega di bronzo povero, e furono coniate durante i regni di sei Imperatori, dal 253 al 273 D.C.

The hull lies under a sand dune in shallow water. There are no traces of the cargo: possibly the coins would be used to buy goods, maybe Sicilian wheat.

Lo scafo giace sotto una duna di sabbia a bassa profondità: non si sono trovate tracce del carico: forse le monete avrebbero dovuto essere usate per comperare merci, probabilmente grano Siciliano.
