    The Attilio Deffenu auxiliary cruiser 
    off San Cataldo di Brindisi 1941

The Attlio Deffenu was a postal-liner, built during 1927. 
At the beginning of the II World War, she was equipped with two 100mm guns, with several machine guns and with depth charges, and classified as auxiliary cruiser; she served in several convoy escort.

L' Attilio Deffenu era un postale-passeggeri, costruito nel 1927.
All'inizio della II Guerra Mondiale, venne equipaggiato con due cannoni da 100mm, alcune mitragliere antiaeree e bombe di profondità, e fu riclassificato come incrociatore ausiliario: fu impiegato in missioni di scorta.

At the beginning of 1941, the Attilio Deffenu was escorting a little convoy from the Italian base of Taranto to Patrasso (Greece), when she was spotted and attacked by a British submarine: a torpedo hit the Italian auxiliary cruiser, that rapidly sunk.

All'inizio del 1941, l' Attilio Deffenu stava scortando un piccolo convoglio dalla Base di Taranto a Patrasso (Grecia), quando fu avvistato ed attaccato da un sommergibile Britannico: un siluro colpì l'incrociatore ausiliario, che affondò rapidamente.

The wreck lies on a sandy bottom at a depth of -30m, about 13 miles off San Cataldo. The hull is in fine conditions, slightly heeled to starboard: part of the wooden deck is still visible.
The bow gun still stands on the collapsed deck, while the stern one lies on the sand, surrounded by its own ammonitions. A  propeller is partially buried in the sand, while the other one is missing.

Il relitto giace su un fondo sabbioso ad una profondità di -30m, circa 13 miglia al largo di San Cataldo. Lo scafo è in discrete condizioni, leggermente sbandato a destra: parte del ponte in legno è ancora visibile.
Il cannone di prua si drizza ancora dal ponte parzialmente crollato, mentre quello di poppa giace sulla sabbia, circondato da bossoli esplosi. Un'elica è ancora in posizione, parzialmente sepolta nella sabbia, mentre la seconda è scomparsa.
