     The UB-52  UB-III-class German submarine
     off Brindisi 1918

 

The UB-52 was a German submarine of the successiful UB III class: she was built in Hamburg by Blohm & Voss during 1916 and launched during 1917.

The submarines of the UB III class were 55.30m long; displacement 516 tons (surfaced) 651 tons (submerged); max speed 13.6kn (surfaced) 8kn (submerged); five 533mm torpedo launchers, one 88mm gun. They were designed to dive down to -50m.

I sommergibili della Classe UB III erano lunghi 55.30m; dislocamento 516 tonnellate (in emersione) 651 tonnellate (in immersione); velocità massima 13.6 nodi (in emersione) 8 nodi (in immersione); cinque tubi lanciasiluri, un cannone da 88mm. Erano progettati per immergersi fino a -50m.

The UB-52 was based in Pula, and operated four patrols, sinking fourteen enemy ships.

On May 23, 1918, she was torpedoed by the British submarine HMS H4, and sank off Brindisi. 32 men of the crew died.
