     The HMS Tempest T-class British submarine 
     in Taranto Gulf 1942

The HMS Tempest was a T-class British submarine, built by Cammell Laird Shipyard in Birkenhead during 1940, and launched during 1941.

L' HMS Tempest era un sommergibile Britannico della Classe T, costruito a Birkenhead dai cantieri Cammell Laird Shipyard nel corso del 1940, e varato nel 1941.

On February 13, 1942, the HMS Tempest spotted a cargo ship in the Gulf of Taranto (Ionian Sea): the latter showed her neutral markings, as she carried supplies for the Red Cross. The HMS Tempest didn't attack the cargo, but a second British submarine, the HMS Una, torpedoed the supply ship, that exploded and sank.

Il 13 Febbraio 1942, l' HMS Tempest avvistò nel Golfo di Taranto una nave da carico con insegne neutrali, dato che trasportava rifornimeni per la Croce Rossa. L' HMS Tempest rinunciò all'attacco, ma un secondo sommergibile Britannico, l' HMS Una, silurò il trasporto della Croce Rossa, che esplose ed affondò.

The Italian torpedo boat Circe counterattacked depth charging the submarine: the HMS Tempest was damaged and forced to surface, and the torpedo boat gunfired and hit her. 
The crew abandoned the HMS Tempest, and was rescued by the Circe.

La torpediniera Italiana Circe contrattaccò lanciando bombe di profondità: fu l' HMS Tempest ad essere danneggiato, e costretto ad emergere; la torpediniera Italiana lo colpì nuovamente con fuoco d'artiglieria.
L'equipaggio abbandonò l' HMS Tempest, e fu raccolto dal Circe.

But the submarine was still floating (the scuttling charges set by the crew failed) and the Italians boarded the HMS Tempest to take her on tow: at the same time, suddenly, the stern of the submarine sank. 
The Italian sailors had just the time to abandon frantically the submarine, and the HMS Tempest sank vertically in the Gulf of Taranto, at 39°15'N, 14°45'E.

Ma il sommergibile galleggiava ancora (le cariche di affondamento disposte dall'equipaggio non funzionarono), e gli Italiani abbordarono l' HMS Tempest per prenderlo a rimorchio: ma nello stesso momento, all'improvviso, la poppa del sommergibile affondò.
Gli Italiani ebbero appena il tempo si saltare in acqua, e l' HMS Tempest affondò verticalmente nel Golfo di Taranto, a 39°15'N, 14°45'E.
