    The U-731 German VII-C class submarine
    off Tangier 1944

The U-731 was one of the successiful VII-C class German submarines: she was built in Danzig by F.Schichau during 1941, and launched during 1942.

The submarines of the VII-C class were 67.10m long; displacement 769 tons (surfaced) 871 tons (submerged); max speed 17.7kn (surfaced) 7.5kn (submerged); five 533mm torpedo launchers; one 88mm gun, plus one or two 20mm or one 37mm machine gun. They were designed to dive down to -220m.

The U-731 performed four missions.
On May 15, 1944, the U-731 was off Tangier heading to the Straits of Gibraltar, when she was spotted and depth charged by the British anti-submarine trawler HMS Blackfly and the sloop HMS Kilmarnock, supported by two American PBY Catalina seaplanes.

L' U-731 effettuò tre missioni.
Il 15 Maggio 1944, l' U-731 era al largo di Tangeri e faceva rotta verso lo Stretto di Gibilterra, quando fu avvistato ed attaccato con bombe di profondità dal peschereccio anti-sommergibile HMS Blackfly e dallo sloop HMS Kilmarnock, appoggiati da due idrovolanti Statunitensi PBY Catalina.

No man of the 54-crew could be rescued.
