    The U-761 German VII-C class submarine
    off Tangier 1944

The U-761 was one of the successiful VII-C class German submarines: she was built in Wilhelmshaven by Kriegsmarinewerft during 1940-41, and launched during 1942.

The submarines of the VII-C class were 67.10m long; displacement 769 tons (surfaced) 871 tons (submerged); max speed 17.7kn (surfaced) 7.5kn (submerged); five 533mm torpedo launchers; one 88mm gun, plus one or two 20mm or one 37mm machine gun. They were designed to dive down to -220m.

The U-761 performed three missions.
In course of her first attempt to force the Straits of Gibraltar, the U-761 was spotted by a n American PBY Catalina seaplane, and later attacked by a British Catalina and by an American Lockheed Ventura anti-submarine bomber.
The German submarine escaped.

L' U-761 effettuò tre missioni.
Mentre tentava di forzare lo Stretto di Gibilterra, l' U-761 fu localizzato da un idrovolante Statunitense PBY Catalina, e più tardi attaccato da un Catalina Britannico e da un bombardiere Lockheed Ventura Statunitense.
Il sommergibile Tedesco riuscì a sfuggire alla caccia.

On February 24, 1944, the U-761 was off Tangier, again heading to the Straits of Gibraltar, when she was spotted and depth charged by the British destroyers HMS Wishart and the HMS Anthony. 
The resistance hull of the U-761 suffered severe damages.

Il 24 Febbraio 1944, l' U-761 era al largo di Tangeri, cercando ancora una volta di attraversare lo Stretto di Gibiltera, quando fu avvistato ed attaccato con bombe di profondità dai cacciatorpediniere Britannici HMS Wishart ed HMS Anthony.

The crew had just the time to surface and abandon the submarine: the U-761 was scuttled at 35°55'N, 5°45'W.
9 men of the crew died or were missing, while 48 could be rescued.
