    The U-617 German VII-C class submarine 
    off Melilla 1943

The U-617 was one of the successiful VII-C class German submarines: she was built in Hamburg by Blohm und Voss during 1941, and launched during 1942.

The submarines of the VII-C class were 67.10m long; displacement 769 tons (surfaced) 871 tons (submerged); max speed 17.7kn (surfaced) 7.5kn (submerged); five 533mm torpedo launchers; one 88mm gun, plus one or two 20mm or one 37mm machine gun. They were designed to dive down to -220m.

The U-617 sank eleven enemy ships in seven missions, totalling 30000 tons.

L' U-617 affondò undici navi nemiche in sette missioni, per un totale di 30000 tonnellate.

On September 12, 1943, the U-617 was off Melilla (East of the Straits of Gibraltar) when she was spotted and depth charged by two British bombers Firey Swordfish and some Loockheed A 28 Hudson.
The resistance hull of the U-617 suffered severe damages, and the German commander headed to the coast to ground the submarine and to save the crew.

Il 12 Settembte 1943, l' U-617 si trovava al largo di Melilla ( ad Est dello Stretto di Gibilterra) quando fu localizzato ed attaccato con bombe di profondità da due bombardieri Britannici Fairey Swordfish ed alcuni Lockheed a 28 Hudson.
Lo scafo di resistenza dell' U-617 subì gravi danni, ed il Comandante Tedesco si diresse verso la costa per incagliare il sommergibile e salvare l'equipaggio.

The U-617 successifully grounded at 35°38'N, 3°27'W. 
No man of the 49-crew died.

L' U-617 riuscì ad arenarsi a 35°38'N, 3°27'W.
Nessuno dei 49 uomini dell'equipaggio morì.

The wreck was later destroyed by the gunfire of the Australian minesweeper HMAS Woollangong and of the British corvette HMS Hyacinth.
