    The U-340 German VII-C class submarine 
    near Tangier 1941

The U-340 was one of the successiful VII-C class German submarines: she was built in Emden by Nordseewerke during 1941, and launched during 1942.

The submarines of the VII-C class were 67.10m long; displacement 769 tons (surfaced) 871 tons (submerged); max speed 17.7kn (surfaced) 7.5kn (submerged); five 533mm torpedo launchers; one 88mm gun, plus one or two 20mm or one 37mm machine gun. They were designed to dive down to -220m.

The U-340 operated three missions.
On November 2, 1943, the U-340 was off Tangier heading to the Straits of Gibraltar, when she was spotted and depth charged by the British destroyers HMS Witherington and HMS Active, and by the sloop HMS Fleetwood, supported by a Vickers Wellington bomber. 
The resistance hull of the German submarine suffered severe damages.

L' U-340 effettuò tre missioni.
Il 2 Novembre 1943, l' U-340 era al largo di Tangeri e faceva rotta verso lo Stretto di Gibilterra, quando fu localizzato ed attaccato con bombe di profondità dai cacciatorpediniere Britannici HMS Witherington e HMS Active, e dallo sloop HMS Fleetwood, coadiuvati da un bombardiere Vickers Wellington.
Lo scafo di resistenza del sommergibile Tedesco fu gravemente danneggiato.

The crew had just the time to surface and abandon the submarine: the U-340 sank at 35°33'N, 06°37'W.
One men of the crew died, while 48 could be rescued.
