The VAS (Vedette AntiSommergibile, Anti-Submarine Motorboat) were a class of versatile, cheap, very fast small vessels, perticularly equipped for the struggle against submarines.

Le VAS (Vedette AntiSommergibile) erano una versatile classe di piccoli battelli, veloci e poco costosi, particolarmente equipaggiati per la lotta anti sommergibile.

Before the end of the I WW, more than 400 motorboats have been employed in different tasks and classes: MAS (Motoscafi Anti Sommergibile, Torpedo Boats), Motodragamine (Mine Sweepers), Posamine (Mine Layers), Pattugliatori Velci (Fast Patrol Motorboats), VAS, and others.

Prima della fine della Prima Guerra Mondiale, più di 400 motovedette erano state impiegate in differenti copiti e classi: i famosi MAS (Motoscafi AntiSommergibili), Motdragamine, Posamine, VAS e molti altri.

During the '30s, many classes of motorboats have been developed (ranging from 35 to 90 tons, 18 to 35m-long) and nearly 100 have been built before the end of the II WW.

Nel corso degli anni '30, furono sviluppate molte classi di motovedette (dislocamento tra 35 e 90 tonnellate, lunghezza tra 18 e 35m), e poco meno di 100 unità furono varate prima della fine della II Guerra Mondiale.

The VAS that sank off Genova probably during 1945, was built by Baglietto in Varazze (1941). 
It was 34m-long (90 tons), and was equipped by 3 gasoline engines (1 Isotta-Fraschini and 2 Carraio), giving a total power of 1100hp, for a max. speed of 20kn. She carried two 450mm torpedoes, and two 20mm Breda machine guns. Crew: 26.

La VAS che affondò al largo di Genova probabilmente nel corso del 1945 fu costruita  a Varazze dai cantieri Baglietto nel 1941.
Era lunga 34m, con una stazza di 90 tonnellate, ed era equipaggiata da tre motori a benzina (1 Isotta-Fraschini e 2 Carraio) per una potenza complessiva di 1100hp, che potevano spingerla ad una velocità massima di 20 nodi. Era armata di 2 siluri da 450mm e da due mitragliatrici Breda da 20mm. Equipaggio: 26 uomini.

The steel hull is still in good conditions, and lies in navigation trim on a muddy bottom, at a depth of -51m. Many navigation instruments are well evident.

Lo scafo in acciaio è ancora in buono stato, e giace in assetto di navigazione su un fondale fangoso, a 51 metri di profondità. Molte strumentazioni di bordo sono ancora ben visibili.
