    The UJ 2210 (Marcella) German corvette 
    off Deiva Marina 1944

The UJ 2210 German corvette was built in St.Nazaire (France) during 1932: in origin, she was a large trawler, particularly designed for long navigations. Her first name was Marcella. The Kriegsmarine captured the Marcella during 1942, and transformed her in a corvette, equipped for anti-submarine struggle.

La Corvetta Tedesca UJ 2210 fu costruita nel 1932 a St.Nazaire (Francia): in origine era un grosso peschereccio a strascico, progettato per lunghe navigazioni. Il suo primo nome fu Marcella. La Kriegsmarine requisì il Marcella nel 1942, e lo trasformò in corvetta, equipaggiata per la lotta anti-sommergibili.

On February 27, 1943, the UJ 2210 attacked and sank the British submarine HMS Tigris, North-West of Stromboli Island.

Il 27 Febbraio 1943, la UJ 2210 attaccò ed affondò il sommergibile Britannico HMS Tigris, a Nord-Ovest dell'Isola di Stromboli.

On May 28, 1944, the UJ 2210 sank in course of a British torpedo attack off the coast of Deiva Marina.
The violence of the explosion broke the corvette in two parts, while the central part of the hull collapsed: now the stern of the UJ 2210 lies on a muddy bottom at a depth of -68m. The 25m long stern, on the contrary, stands in a spectacular vertical position (above) reaching -42m.

Il 28 Maggio 1944, la UJ 2210 affondò nel corso di un siluramento da parte di forze Britanniche, al largo della costa di Deiva Marina.
La violenza dell'esplosione spezzò la corvetta in due, e la parte centrale dello scafo si ripiegò su se stessa: ora la poppa dell' UJ 2210 giace su un fondale fangoso ad una profondità di -68m. Invece il segmento di prua, lungo 25m, è affondato in una fantastica posizione verticale (sopra), e raggiunge i -42m.

The wreck is quite spectacular, and very popular among local scuba divers; but the dive on the Marcella is at least difficult, if not dangerous: the coast off Deiva Marina is an important fishing zone, and the wreck is entangled in trawler fishing nets; the water is often very turbid, and the depth of the stern suggests the use of Helium mixtures.

Il relitto è assolutamente spettacolare, e molto popolare tra i subacquei locali; ma l'immersione sul Marcella è, come minimo, difficile se non pericolosa: la costa presso Deiva Marina è un'importante zona di pesca, e molte reti si sono impigliate sullo scafo; l'acqua è spesso molto torbida, e la profondità a cui giace la poppa suggerisce l'uso di miscele di Elio.

Identification Note
The story of the "Vertical wreck" is full of mistery: some Authors (P.Faggioli, E.Cappelletti, G.Mirto and others) think that it was the UJ 2210 (Marcella). 
Some others (E.Carta and others) identify the "Verical wreck" as the torpedo boat TA 30 (former RT Dragone). 
Both ships were German anti submarine corvettes, both were captured ships, both sank off Deiva Marina during June 1944, both in course of torpedo attacks. 
The identification of the wreck just from historical data is, at least, questionable.

Nota identificativa
La storia del "Relitto verticale" è piena di mistero: alcuni Autori (P.Faggioli, E.Cappelletti, G.Mirto ed altri) pensano che si tratti dell' UJ 2210 (Marcella).
Alcuni altri (E.Carta ed altri) identificano il "Relitto verticale" nella torpediniera TA 30 (ex RT Dragone).
Entrambe le navi erano corvette anti sommergibili Tedesche, entrambe erano navi requisite, entrambe affondarono al largo di Deiva Marina nel Giugno 1944, entrambe furono silurate.
L' identificazione del relitto solo a partire dai dati storici e come minimo dubbia.
