    The Mohawk Deer tanker near San Fruttuoso 1967

The Mohawk Deer was a typical Great Lakes tanker, built in Montreal (Canada) during 1896 and sunk in November, 1967 near San Fruttuoso (Portofino) in consequence of adverse weather conditions, while a tug was towing her to La Spezia for demolition.

Il Mohawk Deer era una tipica petroliera dei Grandi Laghi, costruita a Montreal (Canada) nel 1896 ed affondata presso San Fruttuoso (Portofino) nel Novembre 1967, a causa delle avverse condizioni atmosferiche, mentre un rimorchiatore la stava trainando verso La Spezia per la demolizione.

The hull was broken in two sections by the violence of waves after the collision with the cliff of Portofino promontory: the bow was dramatically twisted (right) and lies on a rocky bottom at a depth of about -18m. 
The capstan (above) is still in place, while a heavy Hull anchor can be seen on the bottom. Two large steam boilers lie on a sandy bottom at a depth of -50m.

Lo scafo si spezzò in due tronconi sotto la violenza dei marosi, dopo aver cozzato contro le scogliere del Promontorio di Portofino: la prua fu piegata in modo impressionante (a destra) e giace sul fondo roccioso ad una profondità di circa -18m.
L'argano (sopra) è ancora in posizione, e una grande ancora Hull giace sul fondo sotto la cubia. Sul fondo sabbioso poco distante, a una profondità di -50m, ci sono due grandi caldaie che alimentavano la macchina a vapore.
