    The "Bettolina" (Landing-craft)  
    near Punta Pedale (S.Margherita) 1943

A German Landing-craft sank near Punta Pedale  (Santa Margherita Ligure) probably during 1943. We have no informations about the circumstances that led to the sinking of this particular Landing-craft. A large number of small barges and crafts served in the German Navy during the II WW.

Un "Mezzo da Sbarco" Tedesco, più propriamente una bettolina, affondò presso Punta Pedale (di fronte a Santa Margherita Ligure) probabilmente durante il 1943. Non ci sono informazioni sulle circostanze che portarono all'affondamento di questa bettolina.
Un gran numero di bettoline e di piccole imbarcazioni servirono nella Marina Militare Tedesca durante la II WW. 

They carried a variety of cargos in short trips, usually from a beach to another. They were slow boats, armed with few machine guns, the favourite preys of Allied submarines, torpedo-boats and fighter-planes.

Trasportavano i carichi più diversi su tratte brevi, di solito da una spiaggia all'altra. Erano scafi lenti, armati con poche mitragliere, le prede favorite di sottomarini, siluranti e caccia-bombardieri Alleati.

The Landing-craft sunk near Punta Pedale was probably attacked by Allied airplanes. The wreck lies capsized on a sandy bottom at a depth of -32m, 300m from the coast. The three propellers (above) are well exposed.

La bettolina affondata a Punta Pedale fu probabilmente attaccata da aereoplani Alleati. Il relitto giace capovolto su un fondo sabbioso a una profondità di -32m, a 300m dalla costa. Le tre eliche (sopra) sono bene evidenti.

The "Bettolina" is much better known by local fishermen than among scuba-divers: the hull is entangled in fishing lines and nets: the sonar-scans (right and above, courtesy of Dr.Edoardo Razzetti) show the capsized hull and the fishnets, surrounded by schools of small fishes.

La Bettolina è molto più popolare tra i pescatori locali che tra i subacquei: reti e lenze sono impigliate sullo scafo. I grafici sonar (sopra e a destra, gentile concessione del dott. Edoardo Razzetti) mostrano lo scafo rovesciato e le reti, circondati da branchi di piccoli pesci.
