    The U-568 German VII-C class submarine

The U-568  was one of the successiful VII-C class German submarines: she was built and launched in Hamburg by Blohm und Voss during 1942.

The submarines of the VII-C class were 67.10m long; displacement 769 tons (surfaced) 871 tons (submerged); max speed 17.7kn (surfaced) 7.5kn (submerged); five 533mm torpedo launchers; one 88mm gun, plus one or two 20mm or one 37mm machine gun. They were designed to dive down to -220m.

The U-568 sank three enemy ships in five missions.
On May 29, 1942, the German submarine was patrolling the Eastern coasts of Libya, when she was spotted by the British destroyers HMS Eridge, HMS Hero and HMS Hurworth. 
The destroyers attacked launching a pattern of depth charges, and the U-586 was severely damaged and forced to surface.
The crew abandoned the U-586 before she sank North-East of Tobruk, at 32°42'N, 24°53'E.

L' U-568 affondò tre navi nemiche in cinque missioni.
Il 29 Maggio 1942, il sommergibile stava pattugliando al largo delle coste orientali della Libia quando fu localizzato dai cacciatorpediniere Britannici HMS Eridge, HMS Hero e HMS Hurworth. 
I cacciatorpediniere attaccarono con bombe di profondità, e l' U-568 fu gravemente danneggiato e costrtto ad emergere.
