    The Gemma Italian 600-class submarine
    off Scarpanthos Island 1940

The Gemma was an Italian submarine of the 600 class, "Perla" series: she was built in Monfalcone by CRDA during 1935, and lauched in 1936.

Il Gemma era un sommergibile Italiano della Classe 600, serie "Perla": fu costruito a Monfalcone nei cantieri CRDA nel corso del 1935 e varato nel 1936.

Just after the launch, the Gemma spent long periods in Eastern Mediterranean and Northern African bases.
During 1937 she took part in the Spanish Civil War. Then, in 1938, she moved in the Red Sea, for a series of test cruises.

Subito dopo il varo, il Gemma passò lunghi periodi nelle basi del Mediterraneo Orientale e dell'Africa Settentrionale.
Nel 1937 prese parte alla Guerra Civile Spagnola. Quindi, nel 1938, si spostò in Mar Rosso, per una serie di crociere di valutazione tecnico-tattica.

At the beginning of the II WW, the Gemma was based in Leros Island (Dodecanese, Greece)

All'inizio della Seconda Guerra Mondiale, il Gemma fu basato sull'Isola di Lero (Dodecanneso, Grecia)

After three missions, on September 30, 1940, the Gemma left Leros to patrol, together with the sisterships Ametista and Tricheco, the channel of Casos (East of Crete).
At the end of the patrol, in the night of October 8, the Tricheco spotted an unknown submarine in the dark, and immediately launched a couple of torpedoes.
Unfortunately, the submarine was the Gemma that, after an order from the base, moved in the zone of the Tricheco.
The Gemma was hit midship, and immediately sank at 35°30'N, 27°18'E, three miles 78° from Kira Panagia, near Scarpanto.
No man of the crew could be saved.

Dopo tre missioni, il 30 Settembre 1940, il Gemma salpò da Lero per una missione di pattuglia nel canale di Caso (ad Est di Creta) insieme ad altri due sommergibil Italiani, l' Ametista ed il Tricheco.
Alla fine della missione, nella notte dell' 8 Ottobre, il Tricheco avvistò nell'oscurità un sommergibile sconosciuto, ed immediatamente lanciò una coppiola di siluri.
Sfortunatamente, il sommergibile era i Gemma che, in seguito ad un ordine dallabase, era entrato nella zona del Tricheco.
Il Gemma fu colpito a mezza nave, ed affondò immediatamente nel punto a 35°30'N, 27°18'E, tre miglia per 78° da Kira Panagia, presso Scarpanto.
Nessun uomo dell'equipaggio si salvò.
