    The HMS York British heavy cruiser
    in Suda Bay (Crete) 1941

The HMS York was a British heavy cruiser, built in Jarrow-on-Tyne by Palmers Shipbuilding & Iron Co. Ltd during 1927, and launched during 1928.

At the beginning of the II World War, the HMS York moved in Mediterranean, where she took part in the Battle of Crete.
On March 26, 1941, she was attacked and severely damaged in her base in Suda Bay (Northern Crete) during an Italian assault operation.

All'inizio della II Guerra Mondiale, l' HMS York fu destinato in Mediterraneo, dove prese parte alla Battaglia di Creta.

During the night of March 25, the Italian destroyers Crispi and Sella got close to Suda and launched six single-man high-speed explosive motor boats (L. Faggioni, A. de Vito, E. Barberi, A. Cabrini, T. Tedeschi and L. Beccati).

The assault crafts eluded the sentinels and got over the anti-submarine defences, then headed to their targets: the crews jumped in the water just a few seconds before the collision. 
One explosive motor boat hit the HMS York, the largest warship in Suda Bay: the explosion severely damaged the hull of the cruiser.

I barchini elusero la sorveglianze e superarono le reti anti-sommergibile, e quindi si diressero ad alta velocità sui loro bersagli: gli incursori si gettarono in acqua pochi secondi prima della collisione.

The HMS York was grounded to avoid her complete loss, but a few days later she was devastated during an intense airplane bombing.

L' HMS York fu portato ad incagliarsi, per evitare la sua completa perdita, ma alcuni giorni dopo fu devastato durante un pesante bombardamento aereo.
