    The HMS Calypso C-class British light cruiser
    South of Crete 1940

The HMS Calypso was a C-class British light cruiser, built in Hebburn-on-Tyne by Hawthorn Leslie & Co. during 1916, and launched during 1917.

Just before the beginning of the II World War, the HMS Calypso moved in Mediterranean.
On June 10, 1940, Italy declared war on Great Britain; two days later, on June 12, the HMS Calypso was spotted South of Crete by the Italian submarine Bagnolini. The submarine launched a single torpedo, that hit the cruiser.

The HMS Calypso sank about 50 miles South of Cape Lithion (Crete): she was the first British warship sank by the Italian Navy during the II World War.
