    The U-596 German VII-C class submarine
    in Skaramanga Bay 1944

The U-596 was one of the successiful VII-C class German submarine: she was built and launched in Hamburg by Blohm und Voss during 1941.

The submarines of the VII-C class were 67.10m long; displacement 769 tons (surfaced) 871 tons (submerged); max speed 17.7kn (surfaced) 7.5kn (submerged); five 533mm torpedo launchers; one 88mm gun, plus one or two 20mm or one 37mm machine gun. They were designed to dive down to -220m.

The U-596 sank 13 enemy ships in 12 missions, totalling 42000 tons.

L' U-596 affondò 13 navi nemiche in 12 missioni, per un totale di 42000 tonnellate.

On September 24, 1944, she was severely damaged by airplane bombs when she was in Skaramanga Bay (Salamis). 
One man of the crew died.
The U-596 was scuttled at 37°59'N, 23°34'E. 
The hull was dismantled by depth charges few days later.

Il 24 Settembre 1944, fu gravemente danneggiato da bombe d'aereo mentre era nella Baia di Skaramanga, presso Salamina.
Un membro dell'equipaggio morì.
L' U-596 non potè essere riparato, e fu affondato dall'equipaggio a 37°59'N, 23°34'E.
Lo scafo fu smantellato pochi giorni dopo con bombe di profondità.
