    The U-407 German VII-C class submarine 
    South of Milos 1944

The U-407  was one of the successiful VII-C class German submarines: she was built in Danzig by Danziger Werft during 1940, and launched during 1941.

The submarines of the VII-C class were 67.10m long; displacement 769 tons (surfaced) 871 tons (submerged); max speed 17.7kn (surfaced) 7.5kn (submerged); five 533mm torpedo launchers; one 88mm gun, plus one or two 20mm or one 37mm machine gun. They were designed to dive down to -220m.

I sommergibili della Classe VII-C erano lunghi 67.10m; dislocamento 769 tonnellate (in emersione) e 871 tonnellate (in immersione); velocità massima 17.7 nodi (in emersione) e 7.5 nodi (in immersione); erano armati con cinque tubi lanciasiluri da 533mm e di un cannone da 88mm, più una o due mitragliere da 12.7mm o un cannone da 37mm; erano progettati per potersi immergere fino a -220m

The U-407 sank four enemy ships in twelve missions, totalling 34000 tons.
On October 1, 1942, she torpedoed the British liner Queen Mary, but no torpedo hit the target. On January 9, 1944, she was damaged by airplane bombs in the base of Pula (Istria).

L' U-407 affondò quattro navi nemiche in dodici missioni, per un totale di 34000 tonnellate.
Il 1 Ottobre 1942 silurò il transatlantico Britannico Queen Mary, ma nessun siluro colpì il bersaglio. Il 9 gennaio 1944 fu danneggiato da bombe d'aereo nella base di Pola (Istria).

On September 19, 1944, the U-407 was cruising in the Southern Aegean Sea, when she was spotted South of Milos by three Allied destroyers: the Polish Garland, and the British HMS Troubridge and HMS Terpsichore.
The destroyers attacked launching depth charges: the U-407 was severely damaged and the crew had just the time to surface and abandon the submarine.
The U-407 sank at 36°27'N, 24°33'E. 
Five men of the crew died or were missing, while 48 could be rescued.

Il 19 Settembre 1944, l' U-407 stava incrociando nell'Egeo meridionale, quando fu avvistato a Sud di Milos da tre cacciatorpediniere Alleati: il Polacco Garland, ed i Britannici HMS Troubridge e HMS Terpsichore.
I cacciatorpediniere attaccarono con bombe di profondità: l' U-407 fu seriamente danneggiato, e l'equipaggioebbe appena il tempo di emergere e di abbandonare il sommergibile.
L' U-407 affondò a 36°27'N, 24°33'E.
Cinque uomini dell'equipaggio morirono o rimasero dispersi, mentre altri 48 poterono essere salvati.
