    The U-557 German VII-C class submarine
    West of Crete 1941 

The U-557 was one of the successiful VII-C class German submarine, built in Hamburg by Blohm und Voss during 1940 and launched during 1941.

The submarines of the VII-C class were 67.10m long; displacement 769 tons (surfaced) 871 tons (submerged); max speed 17.7kn (surfaced) 7.5kn (submerged); five 533mm torpedo launchers; one 88mm gun, plus one or two 20mm or one 37mm machine gun. They were designed to dive down to -220m.

The U-586 sank 7 enemy ships in 4 missions, totalling 37000 tons.

On December 15, 1941, she torpedoed and sank the British cruiser HMS Galathea North of Alexandria. 
Then, she headed to the German submarines base in Salamis. At the same time, the Italian torpedo boat Orione left her base in Suda (Crete): the Italian Commander was unaware of U-557's movements.

Il 15 Dicembre 1941, silurò ed affondò l'incrociatore Britannico HMS Galathea a Nord di Alessandria.

When the Orione spotted the U-557 West of Crete, the Italian Commander thought she was an Allied submarine: the torpedo boat rammed the German submarine, that immediately sank at 35°15'N, 23°19'E.
No man of the unlucky submarine could be rescued.
