      The Greek trade vessel of Alonnissos
      V Century B.C.

The V Century B.C. Greek shipwreck found near Alonnissos Island (Northern Sporades) is probably the largest Classical age trade vessel known. 
The exploration of the precious vessel and of its cargo began in August 1992: some 90 people, including archaeologists, divers, technicians, are still working at the recovery operations.

Il relitto Greco del V Secolo A.C. scoperto presso l'Isola di Alonnissos (Sporadi Settentrionali) è probabilmente la più grande nave commerciale dell'Età Greca classica che si conosca.
L'esplorazione della preziosa nave e del suo carico è cominciata nel 1992: circa 90 persone tra Archeologi, sommozzatori e tecnici stanno ancora lavorando alle operazioni di recupero.

The ship was probably an Athenian trade vessel, carrying a cargo of wine amphorae (left) from the town of Mende (Macedonia), from Skopelos Island (the ancient Peparethos) and Alonnissos (the ancient Ikos), famous for the quality of their wines, actively exported across the Mediterranean and the Black Sea.

La nave era probabilmente una oneraria Ateniese, che trasportava un carico di anfore vinarie (a sinistra) provenienti dall'antica città di Mende (Macedonia), dall'Isola di Skopelos (l'antica Peparethos) e da Alonnissos (l'antica Ikos), famose per la qualità dei loro vini, attivamente esportati attraverso tutto il Mediterraneo ed il Mar Nero.

The ship carried also a large amount of Athenian pottery, including black glaze kylixes with printed rays; bowls and wine pitchers; cooking pots and mugs (right).

La nave trasportava anche un ingente carico di ceramiche Ateniesi, che includeva kylix neri con raggi stampati; brocche e calici da vino; pentole da cottura e boccali (a destra).

The photogrammetry of the amphorae field (left) produced a drawing of a vessel that is considerably larger than any other Classical age shipwreck found.
Parts of the wooden hull are probably still preserved under the amphorae.

La fotogrammetria del campo di anfore (a sinistra) ha fornito l'immagine di una nave considerevolmente più grande di ogni altro relitto dell'Età Classica scoperto finora.
Parti dello scafo in legno sono probabilmente ancora conservate sotto lo strato di anfore.

The ship of  Alonnissos was about 30m long and 10m wide, with a max cargo load of some 4000 amphorae (right and above, left), that means about 150 tons!
Besides, the ship of Alonnissos is the first archaeological evidence of very large cargos shipped through the Mediterranean during the V Century B.C.

La Nave di Alonnissos era lunga circa 30m e larga 10, con un carico massimo stimato a 4000 anfore (a destra, in alto, a sinistra), per un totale di ben 150 tonnellate!
La Nave di Alonnissos, inoltre, è il primo esempio di grandi carichi commerciali trasportati via nave attraverso il Mediterraneo nel V Secolo A.C.
