The Mentor English brick near Kythera Island 1802

.

The Mentor was a British brick sunk off Kithera Island, North-West of Crete, in consequence of adverse weather conditions. It was carrying a precious cargo: the unvaluable marble frieze of the Parthenon (left), sculpted by Pheidias. It was removed by Thomas Bruce, the Earl of Elgin, and sent to London.

.

It seems that not only Greek people but the Gods themselves got angry for the despoiling of the marvelous temple, and the ship sunk during a tempest, victim of Poseidon's fury!
Anyway, the frieze was recovered by Lord Bruce, and it is now exposed in the British Museum in London.
