    The HMS Queen Elizabeth British battleship

The HMS Queen Elizabeth was a British battleship, a sistership of HMS Valiant and of HMS Barham.
She was built in Portsmouth Dockyard during 1912, and launched during 1913.

La HMS Queen Elizabeth era una corazzata Britannica, gemella della HMS Barham e della HMS Valiant.
Fu costruita a Portsmouth Dockyard nel corso del 1912, e varata nel 1913.

During the I World War the HMS Queen Elizabeth took part in the Battle of Jutland, serving in the Grand Fleet.
Between the two Wars she was modernized twice.

Nel corso della I Guerra Mondiale la HMS Queen Elizabeth servì nella Grand Fleet, e prese parte alla Battaglia dello Jutland.
Tra le due Guerre fu rimodernata due volte.

At the beginning of the II World War the HMS Queen Elizabeth operated in the Home Fleet, then during 1941 she moved in Mediterranean, and was based in Alexandria.

All'inizio della II Guerra Mondiale, la HMS Queen Elizabeth servì nella Home Fleet, quindi nel 1941 fu trasferita in Mediterraneo, destinata alla base di Alessandria d'Egitto.

On December 18, 1941, the HMS Queen Elizabeth was attacked and severely damaged in her base at Alexandria during an Italian assault operation.
Two attacks have been already brought by the Italian submarines Iride (August 22, 1940) and Gondar (September 29, 1940): both attacks failed.

Il 18 Dicembre 1941, la HMS Valiant fu attaccata e gravemente danneggiata nella sua base di Alessandria d'Egitto da assaltatori subacquei Italiani.
Due attacchi erano già stati portati dai sommergibili Italiani Iride (22 Agosto 1940) e Gondar (29 Settembre 1940), ma entrambi erano falliti.

During the night of December 17, the Italian submarine Scirè got close to Alexandria and launched three chariots, called "maiali", and their crews (L. Durand De la Penne, A. Marceglia, V. Martellotta, E. Bianchi, S. Schergat, M. Marino).

Nella notte del 17 Dicembre, il sommergibile Italiano Scirè si avvicinò al porto di Alessandria e mise in acqua tre Siluri a lenta corsa, i famosi "maiali" ed i loro equipaggi (L. Durand De la Penne, A. Marceglia, V. Martellotta, E. Bianchi, S. Schergat, M. Marino).

The Italian torpedoes eluded the sentinels and got over the anti-submarine defences, then headed to their targets: the battleships HMS Vailant and HMS Queen Elizabeth, and the tanker Sagone (the original target would have been the aircraft carrier HMS Eagle, but she wasn't in Alexandria).
The Italian divers placed the charges on the bottom, close to the enemy ships: when they surfaced, the British sailors took them prisoners. 

I "maiali" Italiani elusero le sentinelle e superarono le barriere anti-sommergibili, quindi si diressero verso i loro obiettivi: le corazzate HMS Valiant e HMS Queen Elizabeth, e la petroliera Sagone (il bersaglio originale avrebbe dovuto essere la portaerei HMS Eagle, ma quest'ultima non si trovava nel porto di Alessandria).
I sommozzatori Italiani lasciarono le cariche esplosive sul fondo, vicino alle navi nemiche: quindi emersero, e furono catturati dai marinai Britannici.

The Italian Commander, Lieutenant Luigi Durand De la Penne (left), refused to reveal where the Italians have placed the charges: the explosions sank both battleships and severely damaged the Sagone and the destroyer HMS Jarvis, that was refuelling from the tanker.

Il Comandante Italiano, Tenente di Vascello Luigi Durand de la Penne (a sinistra), rifiutò di rivelare dove gli incursori avevano piazzato le cariche: le esplosioni affondarono le corazzate e danneggiarono gravemente la Sagone ed il cacciatorpediniere HMS Jarvis, che si stava rifornendo dalla petroliera.

The HMS Queen Elizabeth was recovered and repaired in Alexandria Dockyards for more than 12 months. 

La HMS Queen Elizabeth fu sollevata dal fondo, fu portata nei cantieri di Alessandria e sottoposta a lavori di riparazione che durarono più di un anno. 

The venerable battleship was sold and dismantled during 1948.

La veneranda HMS Queen Elizabeth fu venduta per la demolizione nel 1948.
