     The Gondar Italian submarine North of Sollum 1940

The Gondar was one of the Italian submarines particularly equipped to operate as a base for assault operations: they could carry up to three Siluri a lenta corsa ("maiali", chariots).

Just after the sinking of Iride in August, 1940, the Italian Navy began the transformation of the submarine Scirè and Gondar in manned torpedoes carriers.

Subito dopo l'affondamento dell' Iride nell'Agosto 1940, la Regia Marina iniziò la trasformazione dei sommergibili Scirè e Gondar per renderli adatti a trasportare i "maiali".

The new Commander of the Gondar was the experienced Lieutenant F. Brunetti, former Commander of the Iride.
On September 21, 1940, the Gondar left her base in La Spezia (Italy), heading to the Italian base in Tobruk: she was going to attack the British Fleet in Alexandria.

But on September 29, 1940, the Gondar was spotted North of Sollum by the British destroyer HMS Stuart. 
On September 30, the Gondar was attacked by British destroyers and by a British seaplane Short Sunderland.

The Italian submarine was severely damaged by depth charges, and was forced to surface. 
The crew abandoned the submarine, then the Gondar was scuttled, together with her three manned torpedoes.

L'equipaggio abbandonò il sommergibile, e quindi affondò il Gondar con cariche di demolizione, insieme ai suoi "maiali".
