    The U-559 German VII-C class submarine 
    North-East of Port Said 1942

The U-559 was one of the successiful VII-C class German submarines: she was built in Hamburg by Blohm und Voss during 1940, and launched during 1941.

The submarines of the VII-C class were 67.10m long; displacement 769 tons (surfaced) 871 tons (submerged); max speed 17.7kn (surfaced) 7.5kn (submerged); five 533mm torpedo launchers; one 88mm gun, plus one or two 20mm or one 37mm machine gun. They were designed to dive down to -220m.

I sommergibili della Classe VII-C erano lunghi 67.10m; dislocamento 769 tonnellate (in emersione) e 871 tonnellate (in immersione); velocità massima 17.7 nodi (in emersione) e 7.5 nodi (in immersione); erano armati con cinque tubi lanciasiluri da 533mm e di un cannone da 88mm, più una o due mitragliere da 12.7mm o un cannone da 37mm; erano progettati per potersi immergere fino a -220m

The U-559 sank 5 enemy ships in 10 missions, totalling 13000 tons.

L' U-559 affondò 5 nevi nemiche in 10 missioni, per un totale di 13000 tonnellate.

On November 27, 1941, the U-559 torpedoed and sank the Australian sloop HMAS Parramatta off Tobruck (Lybia).

Il 27 Novembre 1941, l' U-599 silurò ed affondò lo sloop Australiano HMAS Parramatta al largo di Tobruck (Lybia).

On October 30, 1942, the U-559 was spotted by five British destroyers: the HMS Dulverton, the HMS Hero, the HMS Hurworth, the HMS Pakenham and the HMS Petard.
The destroyers attacked the U-559 launching a pattern of depth charges at 32°30'N, 33°00'E: the German submarine was severely damaged, and the crew surfaced and abandoned the ship.
7 men of the German crew died, while 38 could be rescued.

Il  30 Ottobre 1942, l'  U-559 fu localizzato da cinque cacciatorpediniere Britannici: HMS Dulverton, HMS Hero, HMS Hurworth, HMS Pakenham e HMS Petard.
I cacciatorpediniere attaccarono l' U-559 con bombe di profondità a 32°30'N, 33°00'E: il sommergibile Tedesco fu gravemente danneggiato, e l'equipaggio fu costretto ad emergere ed ad abbandonare la nave.
7 uomini dell'equipaggio morirono, gli altri 38 poterono essere salvati.

The damaged U-559 was sinking very slowly, and three British officers of the HMS Petard had the time to board the submarine, and to get into the hull: they captured many top-secret documents, including a manual that allowed to break the secret of Enigma, the famous German code-machine.
But suddenly the U-559 sank, and two of the brave British officers drowned in the attempt to recover new documents.

L' U-559 era gravemente danneggiato, ma affondava molto lentamente, e tre Ufficiali dell' HMS Petard ebbero il tempo di abbordare il sommergibile, e di entrare nello scafo: essi si impadronirono di molti documenti segreti, tra cui un manuale che si dimostrò utilissimo per penetrare il segreto di Enigma, la famosa macchina cifrante Tedesca.
Ma improvvisamente l' U-559 affondò, e due dei coraggiosi Ufficiali Britannici annegarono nel tentativo di impadronirsi di altri documenti.
