The HMS Rainbow was an old English submarine of the R class: she was built in Chatham by Chatham Dockyard during 1929 and launched during 1930.

L' HMS Rainbow era un vecchio sommergibile Britannico della Classe R: fu costruito a Chatham da Chatham Dockyard nel corso del 1929, e varato nel 1930.

Since the first months of the II WW, the HMS Rainbow operated in Mediterranean. 
On October 4, 1940 the British submarine was patrolling the Southern Adriatic, when she spotted the Italian merchant Antonietta Costa off the coast of Durazzo, and maneuvred to attack. 
But the Italian Captain, in turn, rammed the HMS Rainbow, that rapidly sank with all hands.

Fin dai prmi mesi della Seconda Guerra Mondiale, l' HMS Rainbow operò in Mediterraneo.
Il 4 Ottobre 1940, il somergibile Britannico stava pattugliando l'Adriatico meridionale, quando avvistò il mercantile Italiano Antonietta Costa al largo di Durazzo, e manovrò per attaccarlo. 
Ma il Comandante Italiano, a sua volta, speronò l' HMS Rainbow, che affondò rapidamente con tutto l'equipaggio.

The British submarine cannot be identified by the Italians.
In the same days, the Italian submarine Enrico Toti sank the British HMS Triad in the Gulf of Taranto, but this submarine was erroneously identified as the HMS Rainbow. 
Just during 1988 the British Authorities identified the HMS Triad as the adversary of the Enrico Toti, so the mystery of the submarine sunk off Durazzo could be solved.

Il sommergibile Britannico non potè essere identificato dagli Italiani.
Negli stessi giorni, il sommergibile Italiano Enrico Toti affondò il Britannico HMS Triad nel Golfo di Taranto, ma questo sommergibile fu erroneamente ritenuto l' HMS Rainbow.
Solo nel 1988 le Autorità Britanniche identificarono l' HMS Triad come l'avversario dell' Enrico Toti, risolvendo così anche il mistero del sommergibile affondato al largo di Durazzo.
