The Re d'Italia was an Italian armoured frigate, built by Webb Dockyards in New York (USA) during 1864.

La Re d'Italia era una fregata corazzata Italiana, costruita a New York (USA) nei cantiari Webb Dockyards nel 1864.

The Re d'Italia was sunk off Vis Island (Lissa in Italian) on July 20, 1866, during a battle involving the Austrian fleet (commanded by Admiral Tegetthoff) and the Italian fleet (Admiral Persano).
This was the first battle opposing fleets mostly composed of armoured ships: most of them were equipped also with a ram.

La Re d'Italia fu affondata al largo dell'Isola di Lissa (Vis) il 20 Luglio 1866, nel corso di una battaglia che coinvolse la Flotta Austriaca (comandata dall' Ammiraglio Tegetthoff) e la Flotta Italiana (Ammiraglio Persano).
Questa fu la prima battaglia che oppose due flotte composte in maggioranza da navi corazzate: molte di esse erano dotate anche di rostro.

The Italian fleet was much more powerful than the Austrian one, but the skill and the bravery of Admiral Tegetthoff, and of his crews defeated the proud Italian ships: many of them suffered severe damages.
The Re d'Italia was rammed by the Austrian fagship Ferdinand Max, and sank in a few minutes. 
390 men of the Italian crew died or were missing.

La flotta Italiana era molto più potente di quella Austriaca, ma l'abilità e l'audacia dell'Ammiraglio Tegetthoff e dei suoi equipaggi sbaragliarono le orgogliose navi Italiane: molte di esse subirono gravi danni.
La Re d'Italia fu speronata dalla nave Ammiragia Austiaca Ferdinand Max, ed affondò in pochi minuti.
390 uomini dell'equipaggio Italiano morirono o furono dati per dispersi.

The wreck lies at a depth of -105m in St.George's Bay, and is in poor conditions: the frigate was built in wood, and the steel armour covered just the upper parts of the hull.

Il relitto giace ad una profondità di -105m nella Baia di San Giorgio, ed è in cattive condizioni: la fregata era stata costruita in legno, e la corazza d'acciaio copriva solo l'opera morta (la parte emersa) dello scafo.

The Italian armoured gunship Palestro was sunk in the same battle, with more than 200 casualties.

Anche la cannoniera corazzata Italiana Palestro fu affondata nella battaglia di Lissa, con la perdita di più di 200 uomini.
