    The Viribus Unitis Croatian battleship at Pula 1918

The Viribus Unitis was a Croatian (former Austrian) Tegetthoff-class battleship, launched during 1914.

La Viribus Unitis era una corazzata Croata (ex Austro-Ungarica) della Classe Tegetthoff, varata nel 1914.

The Tegetthoff-class units (SMS Tegetthoff, SMS Szent Istvan, SMS Viribus Unitis, SMS Prinz Eugen) were small, modern and efficient Dreadnought-type battleships, 153m-long; 21600 tons; max speed 20.5kn; twelve 305mm guns, plus twelve 150mm and twenty 66mm guns; four torpedo-launchers; crew 1097.

Le unità della Classe Tegetthoff  (SMS Tegetthoff, SMS Szent Istvan, SMS Viribus Unitis, SMS Prinz Eugen) erano piccole, moderne ed efficienti corazzate tipo Dreadnought, lunghe 153m; dislocamento 21600 tonnellate; velocità massima 20.5 nodi; dodici cannoni da 305mm, più dodici da 150mm e venti da 66mm; quattro lanciasiluri; equipaggio 1097 uomini.

The Viribus Unitis was the last large warship sunk in Mediterranean during the I World War. 
She wasn't Austro-Hungarian any more: since October 31, 1918, date of the fall of the Austrian Empire, the Viribus Unitis and her sisterships in Pula, the Tegetthoff and the Prinz Eugen, showed the Croatian flag on her main mast.
When she sank, the Viribus Unitis was a Croatian ship.

La Viribus Unitis fu l'ultima grande nave da guerra affondata in Mediterraneo durante la I Guerra Mondiale.
Non era più Austro-Ungarica: dal 31 Ottobre 1918, data della caduta dell'Impero Austriaco, la Viribus Unitis e le sue gemelle nella base di Pola, Tegetthoff e Prinz Eugen, avevano alzato la bandiera Croata sull'albero maestro.
Quando affondò, la Viribus Unitis era una nave Croata.

During the night between October 31 and November 1, 1918, the lights of the ships in Pula harbour were on, because the fights have been declared over. 
But, a few miles off Pula, the Italian motorboat MAS 95 launched a small assault craft. It was a manned torpedo carrying two 200kg charges, nicknamed "Mignatta" (Leech) piloted by the divers Rossetti and Paolucci.

La notte tra il 31 Ottobre ed il 1 Novembre 1918, tutte le luci delle navi nella baia di Pola erano accese, perchè i combattimanti erano stati dichiarati cessati.
Ma, poche miglia al largo di Pola, la motosilurante Italiana MAS 95 mise in acqua un piccolo mezzo d'assalto soprannominato "Mignatta", un siluro con due cariche esplosive da 200kg, guidato dagli incursori Rossetti e Paolucci.

The Mignatta eluded the sentinels and got over the anti-submarine defences, then headed to the closest large target in the harbour: the Viribus Unitis. 
The divers placed a charge under the hull of the battleship, then surfaced: a boat from the Viribus Unitis captured them. The torpedo was left with the engine on, and a few minutes later it collided with the cargo-ship Wien, that was damaged and sank.

La Mignatta eluse le sentinelle e superò le difese anti-sommergibile, quindi si diresse sulla grande nave più vicina nel porto: la Viribus Unitis.
Gli incursori piazzarono una carica sotto lo scafo della corazzata, quindi tornarono in superficie: un'imbarcazione della Viribus Unitis li prese prigionieri. La Mignatta era stata abbandonata con il motore acceso, e pochi minuti dopo entrò in collisione con la nave da carico Wien, che fu danneggiata ed affondò.

The Italians, after the caprure, revealed they have mined the battleship, so they were tranferred on the Tegetthoff, and the crew began to abandon the ship. 
But a terrible explosion suddenly devastated the Viribus Unitis, that rapidly rolled and sank. 
More than 300 men of the crew died or were missing: among them, the Admiral J.Vukovich, very new Commander of the Croatian Fleet.

Gli Italiani, dopo la cattura, rivelarono di aver minato la corazzata, così vennero trasferiti sulla gemella Tegetthoff, e l'equipaggio cominciò ad abbandonare la nave.
Ma una terribile esplosione improvvisamente devastò la Viribus Unitis, che rapidamente si ingavonò ed affondò.
Più di 300 uomini dell'equipaggio morirono, o furono dati per dispersi: tra essi, l' Ammiraglio J. Vulkovich, nuovissimo Comandante della Flotta Croata.

After the war, Italian divers dismantled parts of the wreck to recover guns and iron. But the main mast was still visible from the surface, at a depth of about -15m, for 40 years after the sinking.

Dopo la guerra, palombari Italiani smantellarono parti del relitto per recuperare cannoni e ferro. Ma l'albero maestro rimase visibile dalla superficie, ad una profondità di -15m, per 40 anni dopo l'affondamento.

The remains of the Viribus Unitis are still on the bottom of the harbour, since they are not dangerous for navigation.
