    The SMS Szent Istvan  Austro-Hungarian battleship
    off Molat Island 1918

The SMS Szent Istvan was the newest Austro-Hungarian Tegetthoff-class battleship, launched during 1915.

La SMS Szent Istvan (Santo Stefano) era la più nuova delle corazzate Austro-ungariche della Classe Tagetthoff, varata nel 1915.

The Tegetthoff-class units (SMS Tegetthoff, SMS Szent Istvan, SMS Viribus Unitis, SMS Prinz Eugen) were small, efficient Dreadnought-type battleships, 153m-long; 21600 tons; max speed 20.5kn; twelve 305mm guns, plus twelve 150mm and twenty 66mm guns; four torpedo launchers; crew 1097.

Le unità della Classe Tegetthoff  (SMS Tegetthoff, SMS Szent Istvan, SMS Viribus Unitis, SMS Prinz Eugen) erano piccole ed efficienti corazzate tipo Dreadnought, lunghe 153m; dislocamento 21600 tonnellate; velocità massima 20.5 nodi; dodici cannoni da 305mm, più dodici da 150mm e venti da 66mm; quattro lanciasiluri; equipaggio 1097 uomini.

Between June 8 and June 9, 1918, the four Tegetthoff-class battleships left their base in Pula with the escort of very few destroyers and torpedo boats: they were going to force the Straits of Otranto, which was blocked by Italian forces. 

Tra l' 8 ed il 9 Giugno 1918, le quattro corazzate della Classe Tegetthoff lasciarono la loro base di Pola con la scorta di pochissimi cacciatorpediniere e torpediniere: dovevano forzare il Canale di Otranto, che era tenuto bloccato dalle forze Italiane.

The SMS Szent Istvan have had problems with the boilers and began to emit an amount of dense smoke, so the sistership SMS Tegetthoff reduced the speed to remain with her. 
But an Italian group spotted the Austro-Hungarian battleships.

La SMS Szent Istvan aveva problemi con le caldaie, e cominciò ad emettere una grande quantità di fumo denso, e così la gemella SMS Tegetthoff ridusse velocità per rimanere vicina .
Ma un gruppo navale Italiano localizzò le corazzate Austriache.

On June 10, two small Italian torpedo-boats, MAS-15 and MAS-21 were patrolling the Middle Adriatic off the Dalmatian Islands. 
The Italian Commander was the experienced Luigi Rizzo, the man who sank the Austro-Hungarian armoured gunship Wien at Trieste, on December 10, 1917.

Il 10 Giugno, due piccole motosiluranti Italiane, MAS-15 e MAS-21, stavano pattugliando l'Adriatico Centrale al largo delle Isole della Dalmazia.
Il Comandante Italiano era l'esperto Luigi Rizzo, l'uomo che aveva affondato la cannoniera corazzata Austro-Ungarica Wien (Vienna) a Trieste il 10 Dicembre 1917.

During the night, the Italian motorboats intercepted the battleships and got over the screen of the Austro-Hungarian destroyers: they were almost invisible in the shade of the dawn.
The MAS-21 attacked the SMS Tegetthoff, but the first torpedo couldn't be launched. The second hit the battleship but didn't explode.

Nella notte, i MAS intercettarono le corazzate e superarono lo schermo dei cacciatorpediniere Austro-Ungarici: erano quasi invisibili tra le ombtre dell'alba.
Il MAS-21 attaccò la SMS Tegetthoff, ma un primo siluro non potè essere lanciato. Il secondo colpì la corazzata ma non esplose. 

The MAS-15 torpedoed the SMS Szent Istvan: both the weapons hit the battleship at the boilers room, causing severe damages.
Then the Italian motorboats manoeuvred to escape the intense gunfire of the Austro-Hungarian fleet.

Il MAS-15 silurò la SMS Szent Istvan: entrambe la armi colpirono la corazzata alla sala macchine, causando gravissimi danni.
Quindi i MAS fuggirono inseguiti da un intenso fuoco d'artigleria della squadra Austro-Ungarica.

The SMS Szent Istvan was rapidly sinking, and the attempt to ground the battleship on Molat Island failed. The crew began to abandon the ship, but suddenly the SMS Szent Istvan capsized and sank.
89 men of the crew died, including the brave engineers that kept the last boilers lit to provide energy to the pumps.

La SMS Szent Istvan stava rapidamente affondando, ed il tentativo di incagliare la corazzata sull'Isola di Molat fallì. L'equipaggio cominciò ad abbandonare la nave, ma all'improvviso la SMS Szent Istvan si rovesciò ed affondò.
89 uomini dell'equipaggio morirono, compresi i coraggiosi macchinisti che mantennero accese la ultime caldaie per dare energia alle pompe. 

The wreck lies capsized on a sandy bottom, at a depth of -66m, and the hull is in good conditions.
The damages caused by the explosiond are clearly visible; the bow was broken off when the battleship collided with the bottom, and lies a few meters from the hull.

Il relitto giace capovolto du un fondale sabbioso, ad una profondità di -66m, e lo scafo è in buone condizioni.
I danni provocati dalle esplosioni sono chiaramante visibili: la sezione di prua si è staccata quando la corazzata ha urtato contro il fondo, e giace ad alcuni metri dal resto dello scafo.

The brass letters of the battleship's name, once on the stern of the SMS Szent Istvan, have been recovered a few years ago. Now they are displayed in the Museum of Pula.

Le lettere in bronzo che formavano il nome della corazzata, e che si trovavano sulla poppa della SMS Szent Istvan, sono state recuperate qualche anno fa: ora sono esposte al Museo di Pola.
