    The U-81 German VII-C class submarine at Pula 1944

The U-81 was one of the successiful VII-C class German submarines: she was built in Bremen by Bremer Vulkan during 1940, and launched during 1941.

The submarines of the VII-C class were 67.10m long; displacement 769 tons (surfaced) 871 tons (submerged); max speed 17.7kn (surfaced) 7.5kn (submerged); five 533mm torpedo launchers; one 88mm gun, plus one or two 20mm or one 37mm machine gun. They were designed to dive down to -220m.

The U-81 was very famous among German submarinrs: on November 13, 1941, she torpedoed the British carrier HMS Ark Royal, that sank off Baleares. The German Commander, Kptlt. Friedrich Guggenberger, received the Knights Cross for this action.
The carreer of the U-81 was one of the most successiful: she sank 26 enemy ships in 17 missions, totalling 70000 tons.

L' U-81 era molto famoso tra i sommergibili Tedeschi: il 13 Novembte 1941 aveva silurato la portaerei Britannica HMS Ark Royal, che affondò al largo delle Baleari. Il Comandante Tedesco, Kptlt. Friedrich Guggenberger, ricevette la Croce di Cavaliere per questa azione.

The U-81 sank at Pula (44°52'N, 13°51'E) during a heavy American airplane bombing. Two man of the crew died.
The wreck was recovered during 1944 and dismantled.
