An American Republic P-47 Thunderbolt fighter-bomber was shoot down and sank South of Bastia during a bombing attack in 1943.

The Thunderbolt was powered by a radial Pratt & Whitney engine (2525hp); max speed 685km/h; range 950km; eight .50 machine guns.

Il Thunderbolt era propulso da un motore radiale Pratt & Whitney da 2525hp; velocità massima 685km/h; autonomia 950km; otto mitragliatrici da 12.7mm.

The propeller and the engine have been damaged during the impact on the sea surface, but are still in place, while the rear part of the fuselage was completely broken off. The cockpit is closed, and the front glass is broken. The eight .50 machine guns are visible in the front part of the wings.
The wreck is entangled in fishnets, and lies on a sandy bottom at a depth of about –40m.

L'elica e il motore sono stati danneggiati nell'impatto con la superficie del mare, ma sono ancora al loro posto, mentre la parte posteriore della fusoliera è stata complatamente divelta. L' abitacolo è chiuso, e il parabrezza è rotto. Le otto mitragliatrici da 12.7mm sono ancora visibili nella parte anteriore delle ali.
Il relitto è ricoperto di reti da pesca, e giace su un fondale sabbioso ad una profondità di -40m.
