    The B 17 Bomber near Calvi 1944

The Flying Fortress of Calvi was an American Boeing B 17 strategic bomber, shoot down by German fighters, and sunk 200m off the coast of Calvi on February 14, 1944.

La Fortezza Volante di Calvi era un bombardiere strategico Statunitense Boeing B 17, abbattuto da caccia Tedeschi ed affondato presso la costa di Calvi il 14 Febbraio 1944.

The B 17 was powered by four radial Wright Cyclone engines (1200hp); max speed 480km/h; range 3000km; thirteen .50 machine guns; bomb load 3000 to 8000kg.

Il B 17 era equipaggiato con quattro motori radiali Wright Cyclone da 1200hp; velocità massima 480km/h; autonomia 3000km; tredici mitragliatrici da 12.7mm; carico di bombe tra 3000kg e 8000kg.

The front part of the cockpit, as well as the posterior part of the fuselage, have been broken off by the violence of the impact with the sea surface.

The propellers have been damaged, and two engines broken off, but the 32m-long wings are almost intact, and the visit to the old bomber is quite spectacular: it lies at a depth comprised between –23 and –27m, completely free from fishnets, and inhabited by large and confident eels (Conger conger).
