    The USS Bristol American Bristol-class destroyer
    off Bone 1943

The USS Bristol was the first Bristol-class American destroyer, built by Federal Shipbuilding & Drydock Co. in Kearny (New York) during 1940, and launched during 1941.

On October 13, 1943, she was escorting a Allied convoy heading to Oran (Algeria).
When the convoy was off Bone, the USS Bristol was spotted and torpedoed by the German submarine U-371: she was hit by a single sound-guided torpedo (gnat). 
The devastating explosion broke the hull in two, and the crew had just few minutes to abandon the ship.

The USS Bristol sank about 70 miles West-Northwest of Bone.
52 men of her crew died or were missing, while the survivors were rescued by the American destroyers USS Trippe and USS Wainwright.
