The HMS Walney (former USCG Sebago) was a Banff-class British escort sloop: she was one of the ten US Coast Guard cutters loaned to the Royal Navy at the beginning of the II World War.

The Banff-class sloops (1700 tons, max speed 16kn, six 5in guns) were slower than a surfaced submarine, but well armed: they were built between 1927 and 1931.

On November 8, 1942, the HMS Walney and her sistership HMS Hartland supported a commandos operation during the Allied invasion of Northern Africa off the coasts of Algeria.
The HMS Walney had on board about 200 American troopers of the 6th Armored Infantry Division.

The French sloop La Surprise attacked the HMS Walney by gunfire: the British sloop capsized and sank off the harbour of Oran.
Just 16 men of the crew, including the Commander, could be rescued.

After the end of the II World War, the surviving Banff-class sloop returned to the US Coast Guard.
