The HMS Hartland (former USCG Ponchartrain) was a Banff-class British escort sloop: she was one of the ten US Coast Guard cutters loaned to the Royal Navy at the beginning of the II World War.

The Banff-class sloops (1700 tons, max speed 16kn, six 5in guns) were slower than a surfaced submarine, but well armed: they were built between 1927 and 1931. 

Le corvette della Classe Banff (1700 tonnellate, velocità massima 16 nodi, sei cannoni da 127mm) erano più lente di un sommergibile in superficie, ma erano bene armate: furono costruite tra il 1927 ed il 1931.

On November 8, 1942, the HMS Hartland and her sistership HMS Walney supported a commandos operation during the Allied invasion of Northern Africa off the coasts of Algeria.
They were hit by gunfire from enemy ships, and sank off the harbour of Oran.

Entrambe furono colpita da fuoco d'artiglieria di navi nemiche, ed affondarono al largo del porto di Orano.

After the end of the II World War, the surviving Banff-class sloop returned to the US Coast Guard.

Alla fine della II Guerra Mondiale, le corvette della Classe Banff superstiti furono restituite alla US Coast Guard.
