    The U-960 German VII-C class submarine
    North-West of Algiers 1944

The U-960 was one of the successiful VII-C class German submarines: she was built in Hamburg by Blohm und Voss during 1942, and launched during 1943.

The submarines of the VII-C class were 67.10m long; displacement 769 tons (surfaced) 871 tons (submerged); max speed 17.7kn (surfaced) 7.5kn (submerged); five 533mm torpedo launchers; one 88mm gun, plus one or two 20mm or one 37mm machine gun. They were designed to dive down to -220m.

The U-960 sank three enemy ships in five missions.

On May 17, 1944, just a few hours after the sinking of the U-616 off Cartagena, the U-960 torpedoed the American destroyer USS Ellyson off Oran: the destroyer had on board the survivors of the U-616.
The attack of the U-960 failed, but two American destroyers counterattacked: the USS Niblack and the USS Ludlow , together with some British Vickers Wellington and Lockheed B 28 Hudson bombers, chased the German submarine for two days, until they hit the U-960 by depth charges.

The German crew had just the time to surface and abandon the submarine: the U-960 sank at 37°20'N, 1°35'E.
31 men of the crew died, while 20 could be rescued.
