    The U-371 German VII-C class submarine
    off Constantine 1944

The U-371 was one of the successiful VII-C class German submarines: she was built in Kiel by Howaldtswerke during 1939, and launched during 1941.

The submarines of the VII-C class were 67.10m long; displacement 769 tons (surfaced) 871 tons (submerged); max speed 17.7kn (surfaced) 7.5kn (submerged); five 533mm torpedo launchers; one 88mm gun, plus one or two 20mm or one 37mm machine gun. They were designed to dive down to -220m.

The U-371 sank 13 enemy ships in 19 missions, totalling 68000 tons.

On May 7, 1942, she was depth charged and severely damaged by two Allied torpedo boats, but survived.
On October 13, 1943, she torpedoed and sank the American destroyer USS Bristol off Bone (Algeria).

On May 3, 1944 the submarine surfaced to recharge her batteries off the coast of Djidjelli, North of Costantine. 
Here the U-371 was spotted by Allied airplanes and by five destroyers: the American USS Campbell, USS Menges and USS Pride, the French Sénégalis and the British HMS Blackney. 
The destroyers chased and depth charged the German submarine for more than 24 hours. 
The U-371 was damaged and forced to surface, but had the time to launch her torpedoes damaging the USS Menges and the Sénégalis.
